Lee County School District (LCSD) Launching Drone Certification Course

  • Bloomberg news service reported that the drone business is expected to rocket more than 6,000 percent by the end of the decade.  (Source: The State, 2017)
  • Arcluster pegs the market size for public safety drones at $1.2 billion in 2022 (Source: Arcluster, 2017)
  • In a report compiled by Pricewaterhouse, the global market for commercial drone technology is expected to skyrocket to $127 billion worldwide by 2020, from about $2 billion today, Bloomberg reported. (Source: Pricewaterhouse, 2016)

Purpose

To discuss the implementation of a drone program that benefits students through its connection with academic standards including Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); global competitiveness; 21st-century sustainability and recognition by the FAA; gainful employment; and the acquisition of a remote pilot’s license leading to various career pathway options.

The purpose of this news conference is to announce that LCSD will be providing a unique opportunity for its high school students to gain a remote pilot’s license. Students at Lee Central High School will be offered the iFLY Drone Pilots certification course, beginning Summer 2019.
